My oldest child is at the age where he wants to help me cook everything. He also wants to taste everything as he stirs (we're working on this, he's only 3). One thing that I've found works is having him help me with bread machine recipes. He can't really taste it because we toss it all in at once. He thinks it's so cool when we have fresh bread for dinner.

Since he's been helping more, I recently bought these really cool measuring cups that actually represent the sizes. How cool are these for kids? He was itching to use them so I thought we would make some easy peasy Kool Aid play dough. These play dough tools are also perfect for homemade play dough.

You can use whatever type of Kool Aid you like for this play dough. We used cherry because that's what we had on hand. This is also a great recipe if you want to make play dough but are all out of food coloring! There is no food coloring needed in this recipe, the Kool Aid gives it a vibrant color.

This activity is perfect on a rainy day or if you're like me and live in a really hot climate, it is perfect for a really hot day. We like to do indoor activities during the summer when the temperatures start to sky rocket here in Texas.

How to make Kool Aid play dough

kool aid play dough ingredients

To make this no cook play dough with Kool Aid, first gather and then measure out your ingredients. You will need:

  • ¾ cup of water
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • 1 packet of unsweetened drink mix (such as Kool Aid, 0.13 oz)
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 tablespoon cream of tartar

In a large mixing bowl combine all the dry ingredients and stir well. Next, add in your wet ingredients. Stir well.

The play dough may be sticky at first. I found that after letting it sit out for about 5 to 10 minutes helped it air out and it was much more like commercial play dough.

Tips for making this play dough

  • If your play dough seems too dry, add a few more tablespoons of water at a time until it is the right consistency.
  • If your play dough seems too wet, try adding more flour.
  • Let your play dough set out for a few minutes before playing with it. It may seem sticky at first. We let it "air dry" for about ten minutes before playing.
  • Try making several different batches with different flavors.
